There’s a tsunami of change as technology advances and the gig economy grows, Staffing Industry Analysts’ President Barry Asin said in his keynote speech today at the start of the Collaboration in the Gig Economy Conference in San Diego.“That intersection of technology and thinking about new ways of work is what this conference is all about,” Asin said.Workers are joining the gig economy, with flexibility being a top reason, cited by 34% in one SIA survey, Asin said. Another 20% cited the ability to earn supplemental income. Only 14% said it was the only type of job they could get.Meanwhile, the median contingent share of workforce at large companies is projected to grow to 25% in 2020 from 10% in 2010.Asin said 53 million people did gig work in 2018 — which includes independent contractors, temporary agency workers, human cloud (online staffing, work services) workers, directly employed temporary workers and statement-of-work consultants.Spending on the gig economy was $1.3 trillion in 2018 with the majority, $800 million being spent on independent contractors. Globally, the amount of spend was $4.5 trillion.“To me this is a huge opportunity and part of the reason it is a huge opportunity is when your customers and when the supply want it as well, the workers themselves, you’re likely to see things move in that direction,” Asin said.In addition, Asin spoke about the effects of the artificial intelligence, blockchain and robotic process automation. He also spoke of the possible convergence where traditional staffing firms embrace new gig technologies and technology platforms adding staffing offerings. The Collaboration in the Gig Economy Conference takes place today and tomorrow in San Diego.
